The Washington Nationals have a rotation capable of dominating opposing lineups, and they have Daniel Murphy, who's having the best season of his life. They have Bryce Harper, who will find a way out of his slump eventually, and maybe that happens in the postseason. There is so much about the Nationals that make them a championship contender.
Which is why it's surprising that they were not the team that made a deal for Aroldis Chapman, who can dominate any lineup of hitters under any circumstances. The Nationals could've had one of the two best available closers. Instead, they settled for less.
Mark Melancon has been an accomplished closer for the Pirates, leading the league with 51 saves last season, earning three All-Star selections. He has a 1.51 ERA.
But Melancon is not at Chapman's level. This is indisputable. And the Nationals could've had Chapman with a better bid.
