Kavan's shutout, Stewart's 4 RBIs send Texas to WCWS

Teagan Kavan tossed a complete-game shutout and Katie Stewart drove in four runs as the Texas Longhorns defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils 5-0 on Sunday at McCombs Field in Austin, earning a trip to the Women's College World Series.

Texas broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Stewart delivered a two-run single to center field. The Longhorns added to their lead in the fifth inning in memorable fashion: Viviana Martinez battled Arizona State starter Kenzie Brown in a 17-pitch at-bat that culminated in an RBI triple, making the score 3-0. Martinez finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk. Stewart provided the final blow in the sixth with another two-run single, capping her 2-for-4 performance. Kayden Henry also had a multihit game, going 2-for-3 and scoring a run.

Kavan scattered five hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out five. She worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning en route to securing the Game 3 victory.

For Arizona State, Yannixa Acuna led the offense, going 2-for-3. Emily Schepp, Tanya Windle and Kaylee Pond each added a single for the Sun Devils, who were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Brown allowed three earned runs on six hits in 4⅓ innings, striking out five and walking one. Meika Lauppe pitched 1⅔ innings in relief, allowing two unearned runs on three hits.

Up next: The Longhorns will face the Tennessee Lady Volunteers in the Women's College World Series on Thursday at OGE Energy Field at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET.
