Shimron Hetmyer will return to West Indies' ODI squad during the series against Sri Lanka with an eye on being in the mix for next year's World Cup, while fast bowler Alzarri Joseph is set for a comeback from injury.

Hetmyer last featured in ODIs against England last June and has since missed West Indies' last three series against Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand. He will join the squad ahead of the final match of the series, which starts on June 3 with all games taking place at Sabina Park.

Hetmyer stood out during the T20 World Cup earlier this year with 248 runs at 41.33 and a strike rate of 186.46, although his recent IPL 2026 with Rajasthan Royals was lean with 78 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 113.04.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) said, "Following his impressive performances during the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Shimron Hetmyer has been reintegrated into the West Indies ODI setup as part of CWI's strategic build-up towards the 50-Over World Cup in October and November next year."

Meanwhile, Alzarri Joseph is in line to play his first internationals since Australia's visit last year after recovering from a back injury. CWI previously said that he, Shamar Joseph - who is also back in the ODI squad - and Jayden Seales would have their workloads carefully managed.

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie is another player who returns to the squad after missing last year's tour of New Zealand.

From the group that was in New Zealand, Alick Athanaze, Johann Layne, Khary Pierre and Romario Shepherd drop out.

West Indies have lost five of their last six ODIs - the victory coming in a Super Over against Bangladesh - but have won their last four series at home dating back to 2023. They are in a race for automatic qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup with a current ranking of 10th. The top-eight teams, alongside hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will secure places through the rankings.

"Sri Lanka are a disciplined and skilful ODI unit, especially in conditions that demand patience and smart cricket," head coach Daren Sammy said. "For us, this series is about setting the standard, intensity in the field, clarity with the bat, and consistency with the ball. We want to play fearless but intelligent cricket and continue building the identity we believe West Indies cricket should represent."

Following the three ODIs against Sri Lanka on June 3, 6 and 8 the sides will play three T20Is, also in Jamaica, followed by two Tests in Antigua.
