Argentina have pulled off a stunning rescue act to beat Egypt 3-2 and reach the World Cup quarterfinals.

Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, who had a goal ruled out, both scored to leave the world champions in deep trouble -- and put the north African side on the brink of a stunning upset.

But Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi -- who had a first-half penalty saved by Mostafa Shobeir -- both found the net in the space of four minutes to dig La Albiceleste out of the hole.

And a late counter attack was whipped into Enzo Fernández who headed home in stoppage time to break Egyptian hearts.

Messi scored his eighth of the tournament, moving him ahead of France's Kylian Mbappé and Norway's Erling Haaland. He continued his goalscoring streak despite the missed penalty, taking it to all five matches in the tournament thus far.

"Being able to experience moments like this, honestly, I thank God, I'm privileged and I want to highlight my teammates -- we have a phenomenal group, a group that never gives up no matter the difficulties and adversity," Fernandez said.

"We're always together. Thanks to my teammates, to the coaching staff, and to everyone cheering us on here and all the Argentines back home in Argentina. Well, one more step forward."

Egypt were hoping to become the second African side in the quarters after Morocco -- but it is Argentina who will take on either Switzerland or Colombia.
