PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills have signed cornerback Nickell Robey to a contract extension, the team announced Sunday.
Robey, 23, has been the Bills' nickel cornerback since signing with Buffalo as an undrafted free agent in 2013.
Robey, who is 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds, was entering the final year of his three-year rookie deal and was set to be paid a minimum salary of $585,000. He would have been a restricted free agent after this season.
Since Robey entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie, the Bills were able to extend him after two seasons, instead of the three seasons required before drafted players can rework their deals.
"Robey has been a productive and dependable cornerback for our team since we signed him in 2013," Bills general manager Doug Whaley said in a statement. "I commend our scouting staff for identifying and signing a player of Nickell's caliber in the undrafted college free agent period. Since entering the NFL, Nickell has worked hard and taken advantage of his opportunities to make plays when called upon.
"Under the tutelage of Rex Ryan and his coaching staff, we believe Nickell will continue to develop and make significant contributions within this defense. Our philosophy is to continue to reward our players. Signing Nickell to an extension is an example of this organization making a commitment to that plan."
A product of USC, Robey has played in 32 games, making eight starts. He has totaled 84 tackles, 18 passes defensed, four sacks and one interception in his two years with the Bills.
