ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy will have surgery on his hip and be out for an undetermined amount of time.
Lions coach Jim Caldwell said Levy had a bit of a "setback" Sunday against Arizona and, after consulting with doctors, will undergo surgery shortly.
Levy played less than a half against Arizona before re-injuring the hip. He had no tackles. The Lions have yet to make a determination whether Levy will be placed on injured reserve, based on the outcome of the surgery.
The Lions don't have the injured reserve-designated to return spot open because the franchise used it on rookie cornerback Alex Carter before the start of the season. Carter is slated to return to practice Monday but cannot be activated until after the bye in Week 9.
With Levy out, the Lions will be without their best defensive player for a long period of time.
"He's a very, very integral part of what we do," Caldwell said.
Caldwell said there was no second-guessing about playing Levy on Sunday. He had practiced for two weeks before returning to the lineup against the Cardinals.
Levy led the NFL in solo tackles last season with 117. He signed a four-year extension with Detroit in the preseason.
