It was called a face mask on the field, but the penalty against Detroit Lions defensive end Devin Taylor on what would have been the last play of last week's game against the Green Bay Packers wasn't egregious enough to draw a fine from the NFL.
A league spokesman said Friday that Taylor was not fined. The fine for a first-offense face mask is $8,681.
Taylor was flagged after his right hand appeared to hit Aaron Rodgers' face mask. After the game, Taylor said he didn't think he got the Packers quarterback in the face mask. It led to the untimed down on which Rodgers threw the game-winning, 61-yard Hail Mary touchdown to tight end Richard Rodgers.
"It was a face mask," Aaron Rodgers said after the game. "I was looking for the flag afterwards. I don't really flop any calls. That was a legit face mask."
Packers guard Josh Sitton, who also was penalized for a face mask against the Lions, was not fined either. Sitton's face mask wiped out a 32-yard gain on a screen pass in the first quarter.
