Neeraj Chopra finished second at the Lausanne Diamond League with a season's best throw of 88.05m. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continued his blazing 2026 with another win, as he finished first with a best throw of 88.14m, just 9cm more than Neeraj.
For Neeraj, the wait for a win continues. The last time he won an event was at the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru back in July 2025, but being back in the 88s must be treated as an extremely encouraging sign.
Neeraj had competed in only two events this year before this -- finishing fourth at the Doha Diamond League, and then second at the Commonwealth Games. Not once had he crossed 86m in those two events.
It looked to be a similar start to that here, as Neeraj's first throw only went 83.54m. Pathirage set the early pace with 85.99m in his first throw and 87.06m with his second.
Neeraj, though, roared back into contention with his second throw, as he beat his previous season's best by 2.23m, with the 88.05m throw that eventually was his best of the evening.
However, with his third throw, Pathirage took the lead back from Neeraj, as he threw 88.14m, to wrap up another win, with the back-half of the competition not really producing too many big throws.
Anderson Peters finished third with a throw of 86.69m.
