Anthony Rizzo busts out big in Cubs' win

PHOENIX -- Anthony Rizzo is the type of offensive player who, when he goes into a slump, you know the breakout will be a big one. That was the case Saturday, as Rizzo shook off a 2-for-16 stretch in the first four games of his team's six-game road trip by tying a career high with six RBIs in the Chicago Cubs' 9-6 win over Arizona.

"I've been grinding," Rizzo said. "It comes with the territory of the season. You just keep battling and not try to do too much, and tonight it paid off."

Rizzo's home run came off Diamondbacks rookie Enrique Burgos, whom he had faced the night before. The young right-hander forced Rizzo to pop out to short on Friday, and the Cubs slugger used that at-bat when the rematch occurred Saturday.

"I was looking fastball, and he left a slider up," said Rizzo, who also hit a three-run double in the fifth inning. "I saw him last night, so that helped a little bit to know what his stuff did. Luckily, I got a good turn on it."

Rizzo's game-winning blast was a sort of returning of the serve to Diamondbacks MVP-caliber first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who hit a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday. Goldschmidt's blast thwarted what appeared to be a Cubs' extra-inning win and allowed Arizona to eventually win in the 13th.

There was no such drama Saturday, as Rizzo's bomb into the pool provided Chicago plenty of insurance runs.

"It's been a battle of the first basemen the last two nights," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "Goldschmidt got us last night. Rizz got them tonight."

The back-and-forth epitomized what is becoming an entertaining battle between two of the top all-around first basemen in baseball. It seems like nearly each time Rizzo and Goldschmidt square off, one of them makes an impact for his team.

"Goldschmidt is a top player in this league," Rizzo said. "He does it every year. I told him when he hit that home run yesterday, 'Man, you're just better than everybody else.' It's fun playing against other top players. He's one of my favorite players to watch, for sure."

The Cubs and Diamondbacks play the final game of their three-game series at 3:10 p.m. CT Sunday. The matchup will wrap up the Cubs' six-game road trip, on which they are 3-2.
