Free agents who teams won't instantly regret signing

It’s almost perfect, really. In the days leading up to the start of free agency, teams have been clearing out salary cap space by buying out the mistakes of the free agencies past.

James Wisniewski was once a huge free-agency headline, brought in to fix the Blue Jackets' defense, and he is being bought out by the Hurricanes. Same with Matt Carle of the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was only last year on July 1 that the Predators signed Barret Jackman, and now he’s gone.

As one coach put it via text on Friday morning, today is a challenging day.

“Lots of potential mistakes,” he said.

The interview window has helped slow down those mistakes, but there’s no doubt there will be contracts signed today that we look back on and wonder what teams were thinking.

So with that in mind, here’s a list of candidates to actually get reasonable deals. And those who don't will still be worth it. In other words, these are free agents whose signings shouldn’t come with immediate regret:
