Rapid Reaction: Brewers 4, Dodgers 3

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. -- A leadoff home run by Joc Pederson and dazzling start by left-hander Clayton Kershaw went for naught as Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers faded late and fell to the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 Monday night at Miller Park.

How it happened: The Brewers trailed 3-1 after being stymied most of the day by Kershaw. Shortstop Hector Gomez hit a one-out solo home run in the eighth to make it a one-run game and pinch hitter Adam Lind ripped a double to the wall. That brought an end to Kershaw’s day. Chris Hatcher came on and gave up a double to Gomez, scoring Lind to tie the game. Ryan Braun worked Hatcher even at 2-2 and then chopped a grounder to Juan Uribe, who fired the throw to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. First base umpire Paul Emmel ruled Braun safe, and after a review of 1 minute, 40 seconds, the call stood and the Brewers had the lead.

Kershaw dazzles early, fizzles late: The left-hander came into the game 4-0 with an 0.87 ERA in four career starts at Miller Park and stuck to the script Monday, striking out the first four Milwaukee batters, finishing with eight on the day. He’d never given up more than one run at Miller Park until Monday, when he was charged with three on five hits with a home run and a balk. Kershaw will have to wait another five days to earn the elusive second victory of his season -- which would also be the 100th of his career.

Mattingly tossed: Kershaw was less than thrilled when he was called for a third-inning balk by Emmel, but Mattingly was even more upset and came out to give Emmel a few words of advice before being ejected.

Up Next: Right-hander Zack Greinke gets the start Tuesday as the Dodgers continue their four-game series at Milwaukee, where he is 15-2 with a 3.21 ERA in 25 career starts. Right-hander Matt Garza will start for the Brewers. He has never faced the Dodgers in his 10-year MLB career.
