Yasmani Grandal exits after being struck by foul ball

WASHINGTON -- Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star catcher Yasmani Grandal left Sunday’s game immediately after being struck in the jaw with a foul ball.

Michael Taylor got a piece of Zack Greinke’s first pitch in the seventh inning and fouled it directly off the bottom of Grandal’s mask. Trainers attended to Grandal's injured jaw on the field briefly before escorting him back to the dugout. He was replaced by A.J. Ellis.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he initially thought Grandal had broken his jaw, but X-rays proved negative. Mattingly said Grandal will undergo further tests Monday in Atlanta.

"When it first happened, I didn’t know what I was saying and they didn't either. I couldn’t really move my jaw too much," Grandal said. "We'll just take it one day at a time and see how it does."

There is an excessive heat warning in Washington, where upper-90s temperatures and high humidity have created oppressive conditions. Grandal missed a week earlier this season on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Grandal came into the game batting .275 with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs.
