Lefty Julio Urias among 16 invited to Dodgers camp

Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias no doubt hopes his stay in big-league camp this spring will last longer than his first taste did last year.

The 19-year-old Urias was one of 16 players given a non-roster invitation by the Dodgers to major league camp at spring training, along with highly-regarded right-hander Jose De Leon, first baseman Cody Bellinger and right-hander Chris Anderson.

Urias pitched just two Cactus League innings at Arizona last spring, giving up a run before making his expected move back to minor league camp. He later went on to post a 3.81 ERA over four different minor league levels in 2015. He held Texas League hitters to a .213 batting average over 68-1/3 innings (13 outings) for Tulsa.

De Leon, 23, advanced as high as Double-A last season after dominating at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. He posted a 1.67 ERA in the California League in just under 40 innings.

Other players in the Dodgers’ system who earned non-roster invitations: right-handers Lisalverto Bonilla, Brooks Brown and Matt West; catchers Kyle Farmer, Jack Murphy and Shawn Zarraga; infielders Charlie Culberson and Rob Segedin; infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera; outfielders Corey Brown, Alex Hassan and Rico Noel.

Dodgers pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to Glendale, Arizona, for spring training on Feb. 19, with the first full-squad workout scheduled to take place on Feb. 25.

The first Cactus League game is scheduled for March 3 against the Chicago White Sox at Glendale, with Opening Day scheduled for April 4 at San Diego. The home opener will take place April 12 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
