Forward Maurice Harkless and guard Luis Montero of the Portland Trail Blazers were both invited to training camps to prepare for the FIBA Americas Championship, FIBA announced this weekend.
Harkless will join the Rick Pitino-coached Puerto Rico team in Louisville for training camp before playing a few friendlies and competing in the event, which runs from Aug. 31 to Sept. 12. The Trail Blazers acquired Harkless from the Orlando Magic in mid-July.
Montero was invited to represent the Dominican Republic, whose team will be coached by Kenny Atkinson and will train in Atlanta, in the competition. Portland signed Montero on July 12.
Harkless and Montero aren't the only Blazers who will be playing international basketball this summer. Mason Plumlee -- acquired in a draft-day trade with the Brooklyn Nets -- was invited to this month's USA Basketball minicamp. Free-agent signee Al-Farouq Aminu will play for the Nigerian national team in the Afrobasket tournament, the winner of which will qualify for the 2016 Olympics.
