Mets may skip Matt Harvey against Rockies on Sunday

BALTIMORE -- New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey is listed as the scheduled starter for Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. However, manager Terry Collins said the Mets may skip Harvey that turn as a way to conserve innings.

It was known that the Mets intended to skip Harvey at least once down the stretch in order to ensure he doesn't blow past 190 regular-season innings in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. However, it originally was assumed that the skipped start would occur in September.

Logan Verrett would fill in for Harvey on Sunday in Colorado if the Mets proceed with skipping Harvey now.

Collins said club officials are discussing whether it would be beneficial to shave the innings now, before it gets to crunch time.

The Mets also intend to go to a six-man rotation in September, once Steven Matz returns from the disabled list. Matz is scheduled to make his second rehab start Thursday, according to Collins.

Team officials clearly are unconcerned about repeating history. In 2007, the Mets blew a massive division lead and missed the playoffs by one game, arguably because they gave Brian Lawrence six starts down the stretch, and one to Philip Humber during the season's final week, as a way to get extra rest for Pedro Martinez.

Harvey currently sits at 154 innings through 119 games. That's on pace for nearly 210 innings for the season.
