Carlos Torres, bullpen struggle as Mets lose in Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- New York Mets reliever Carlos Torres put the pitch where he wanted it. Then Henry Urrutia, leading off the bottom of the ninth, deposited the fastball over the left-field wall as the Baltimore Orioles produced a 5-4 walk-off win Wednesday at Camden Yards.

It was the second straight rough outing for Torres, who was charged with the final two runs in Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"It was exactly where we wanted," Torres said. "We called for a fastball up. I threw the fastball up. These guys, unfortunately, they've been seeing [Noah] Syndergaard and [Jacob] deGrom, so my fastball up probably didn't seem like their fastball up. … I chose the wrong pitch."

The Mets had a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, but Hansel Robles surrendered a game-tying solo home run to Adam Jones.

Logan Verrett needed only six pitches to record three outs after entering for Syndergaard in the sixth, but manager Terry Collins did not have him continue the following inning and instead turned to Robles. That's because Verrett appears ticketed to make a spot start for Matt Harvey on Sunday in Colorado. Skipping Harvey to conserve innings appears to have had an impact on the Mets' season before the event even occurred, considering an unrestricted Verrett might've been a better choice for the seventh.

Meanwhile, the Mets' bullpen continues to be an area of concern. The relief corps has allowed 15 runs (13 earned) in 18 1/3 innings over the past five games against the Pirates and Orioles. Ineffective Bobby Parnell was placed on the disabled list before Tuesday's game, which allowed Verrett to return to the majors.
