ATLANTA -- New York Mets setup man Tyler Clippard is gassed, manager Terry Collins suggested after the reliever struggled Saturday.
Clippard surrendered a game-tying three-run homer to pinch hitter Adonis Garcia in the eighth, but the Mets responded with a pair of runs a half-inning later and beat the Atlanta Braves, 6-4, at Turner Field.
Clippard, whose arrival from the Oakland Athletics on July 27 rescued the bullpen, was making his seventh appearance in the past 11 days.
Collins pledged to give Clippard the day off on Sunday, regardless of the game’s circumstances.
“He’s tired,” Collins said. “I actually think he needs a couple of days [off], and hopefully we’ll get it for him. He’s not going to pitch tomorrow.”
Clippard did not want to make the heavy usage an alibi. He has 62 appearances this season between Oakland and the Mets. He averaged 74 appearances a year the previous five seasons with the Washington Nationals.
“I felt good tonight. No excuses,” Clippard said. “I pitch a lot every year. I’m used to it.”
Pressed about welcoming a day off, Clippard added: “It’s later in the year. We’re hopefully going to be playing in October. We’ve got to think about that. I’ll take a day.”
