NEW YORK -- New York Mets captain David Wright acknowledged relaying a text message from Chase Utley to Ruben Tejada, but gave a telling non-answer when asked if he thought Utley's sentiments were sincere.
"I got the text and I passed it to Ruben," Wright said.
On Utley's two-game suspension, Wright added: "I think everybody in our clubhouse agreed that the slide was late. And, obviously, Major League Baseball agreed that it was late. I think it was correct."
Wright was personally pulled into the issue on Sunday when Dodgers manager Don Mattingly suggested that if Wright had done what Utley did, New Yorkers would be applauding. Wright took the high road before Game 3, though.
"I have a lot of respect for Don Mattingly," Wright said. "When I was out there in L.A. rehabbing, he was a guy that I talked to and took a lot of advice from. I'm not going to say anything negatively about Don, because I have a lot of respect for him. I heard about it, but it's not like he called me out. He just casually mentioned my name, so I don't think it's a big deal."
As for Tejada, he is expected to participate in Monday's pregame player introductions.
"Ruben will be in our thoughts," Wright said. "Hopefully we can go out there and rally behind that."
