JUPITER, Fla. -- The New York Mets' Opening Day roster has been relatively predictable from the get-go, with the exception of a few spots on the margins. Here's a final projection before the Mets break camp on Wednesday afternoon to head to Las Vegas and then on to Kansas City to open the season.
The final developments:
The Mets are likely to carry a long reliever from the beginning of the season, as a safety net for an extra-inning game. They're also likely to carry a six-man bench with Eric Campbell and Matt Reynolds. So that temporarily leaves room for neither Jim Henderson nor Erik Goeddel in the bullpen to start the season.
Henderson has impressed and team officials label him in good shape for a roster spot soon. So he could be added after an erratic first week, once the Mets start playing regularly in April, and when the extra bench player is dropped.
That leaves unresolved whether Sean Gilmartin or Logan Verrett gets the nod for the long-relief role. Verrett had the better spring-training numbers (1.64 ERA vs. 4.50 ERA), but Gilmartin handled the role capably last season. Also, Verrett might be the better choice to be in the Triple-A Las Vegas rotation being stretched out and ready to step in if there is an unexpected injury to a starting pitcher. The topic is still being debated.
Meanwhile, barring the late acquisition of a backup catcher, the Mets have been leaning toward keeping Kevin Plawecki at the major league level rather than getting him regular at-bats with Las Vegas.
