NEW YORK -- Neil Walker has four more games to become the greatest April home run-hitter in New York Mets history.
Walker slugged the eighth home run of his Mets career on Monday. The two-run shot off right-hander JC Ramirez in the seventh inning broke a tie and lifted the Mets to a 5-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the series opener at Citi Field.
Only Dave Kingman (1976), Carlos Delgado (2006) and John Buck (2013) have more homers in April of one season in franchise history. They each slugged nine. Walker’s eight homers are the most in a calendar month in his career. He twice had seven while with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Walker finished Monday 2-for-4 to extend his hit streak to seven games. He is hitting .414 (12-for-29) in that stretch.
Asked if he had ever been this hot in his career, Walker said: “You have your stretches where you get hot and get a lot of base hits or drive the ball -- doubles and so on and so forth. Obviously, never like this, home run-wise. Like I’ve said, I tend to hit a fair amount of fly balls. Maybe those extra push-ups in the offseason are helping.”
Michael Conforto and Lucas Duda also homered Monday. The Mets have 26 homers since the start of their road trip April 15 in Cleveland. That matches the most homers in a 10-game stretch in franchise history. The Mets also had 26 from June 27 through July 7, 2004.
Richard Hidalgo, after a trade from the Houston Astros, helped fuel the binge a dozen years ago. Now it’s Walker leading the surge.
“Some of the balls he’s hit in the other parks, they’re home run parks,” Collins said. “We don’t play in one, but he continued to do it here. I hope he keeps doing it. I hope he stays red hot. He’s a good in spot in the lineup to produce runs because those guys have been getting on base ahead of him.”
