NEW YORK -- New York Mets left-hander Steven Matz earned the National League Rookie of the Month award for May. Matz went 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA.

Matz is only third Mets player to win the monthly award, which was launched in 2001. Justin Turner claimed the honor for May 2011, while Jacob deGrom earned the honor in July and September 2014.

Matz leads all rookie pitchers with seven wins, a 2.60 ERA (with a minimum of 30 innings pitched), and 53 strikeouts.

After recording only five outs in his season debut, Matz rattled off wins in seven straight starts. He departed his last outing in position to up that total to eight straight -- one shy of matching Frank Viola's franchise record -- but Hansel Robles failed to hold a 4-3 lead on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox.

Corey Seager and Trayce Thompson, both of the Los Angeles Dodgers, also received votes.

Matz next pitches on Monday, when the Mets open a series in Pittsburgh.
