NEW YORK -- Eric Campbell collected an RBI in his first big-league plate appearance, when he delivered a pinch-hit sacrifice fly Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. A day later, Campbell got his first start had produced his first hit in the majors.
It came on a fourth-inning single up the middle against Cole Hamels. Campbell went 1-for-3 with a walk before Bobby Abreu pinch hit for him in the ninth of what became a 5-4, 11-inning win.
"It's good to get it out of the way early," Campbell said about the hit. "It's something I'll remember for the rest of my life, for sure."
Campbell is from Norwich, Conn., and his parents were on hand for both weekend games since his call-up. He is staying in New York, though, not doing the commute.
Campbell said he was ready for his first major-league start.
"I was preparing for it last night, because I knew a lefty was in there today," he said.
The Mets next face a lefty on Tuesday -- the Yankees' Vidal Nuno -- but Terry Collins indicated lefty-hitting Lucas Duda is likely to get that start. The Mets were due to face southpaw CC Sabathia on Thursday, but he instead has landed on the disabled list. Right-hander Alfredo Aceves instead is expected to get that start.
