Gus Malzahn, Auburn players excited for new video board

HOOVER, Ala. -- Auburn’s new video board is big, really big. In fact, it’s the biggest in college football, and it’s so big that head coach Gus Malzahn wants to turn it on during fall camp just so his players can get used to it by the time the season starts.

“When you stand on the field and look at it, it’s a lot bigger than you think it would be,” Malzahn said Monday at SEC media days. “It’s got the ‘wow’ factor. I think it’s going to be a great addition to our atmosphere.

“From a coach’s standpoint, a lot of times if there’s not a good angle from the sideline, I will watch video boards on certain aspects of the play, so that will do nothing but help me.”

The players are excited too. Some joked about how amazing it would be to play video games on the new video board while others are just excited to see themselves on it for the first time.

“When they started putting up the frames for it, I was like ‘what else are they building?’ And then you saw the panels going up, it’s huge,” cornerback Jonathan Jones said. “You walk by campus, you can’t miss it. It’s almost as big as one side of the stadium. It’s huge.”

“It’s right outside our dorms. You can’t miss it,” linebacker Kris Frost added. “We’ve seen so much of it, we probably know how to build it ourselves. It’s a pretty amazing sight to watch them put it together, and the final product I know is going to be amazing.”

The video board, which is 57 feet high by 190 feet wide and costs $13.9 million, is set to be completed by early August and will be ready for Auburn’s home opener against Jacksonville State on Sept. 12.

In June, the senior class marked its legacy by signing the top panel before it went up.
