Freddix: "Beyond me how Rashid reckons two further wins (taking MICT to 4 wins from 10) can have you finish in the top two. As confused as his team, I dare say" That relies on a great deal of uncertainty and a massive stroke of luck; it's a scenario filled with ifs, buts, and what-ifs.
Player of the Match, Sherfane Rutherford: "First of all, I want to thank God for this beautiful opportunity to play in the SA20. As a player, I base my game on these types of situations. The most important thing for me is trusting my process. There will always be tough moments, so I focus on playing strong shots and getting myself in. Once I'm set, I know I can give myself the best chance in the final four or five overs. [Pitch] It was definitely difficult to start. It was important to run singles and give myself time to settle. Once the seamers came on, I felt I could put them under pressure by trusting my skills. I did that pretty well tonight, and it turned out to be a great game for us. [Balance strike rotation and power hitting] The key is reading the situation. Last year was tough for me, and my biggest lesson was learning to read the game better. As a power hitter, you often feel like you can take on any ball, but that's when you have to swallow your ego. You have to put the team first and ask, What does the team need to improve the score? I keep reminding myself that I have more time than I think; that's been the key to my batting lately. [Discussion with Brevis] I was telling him 180, but he told me not to look at the score and just keep batting. He wanted us to just keep scoring, knowing we'd end up with a good total. My goal was 180, but credit to him for keeping us focused. As a team, we are very happy."
Keshav Maharaj: "I'm very happy. We had a disappointing start to the home leg, so it's great to get back to winning ways. It was an emphatic win that puts us in a strong position on the table. The guys executed perfectly. Sherfane has been in sublime form, and we've seen how well he is hitting the ball. The feedback from the batters was that we needed to hold those hard lengths when bowling because of the invariable bounce. Our seamers stuck to that plan and got the rewards. 185 was a great total; we were aiming for 160, but the way the guys finished propelled us past that and gave us a nice buffer. We knew the bounce would play a large part. Cape Town were still in it for a while, but once we got those quick wickets, we felt in control. We knew what was at stake this week. We started the competition slowly and a bit rustily, but it's about keeping the execution and the plans simple. In the last two weeks, this team has done the basics well and reaped the rewards. [What's ideal after winning the toss at your home ground] We actually wanted to bowl first today, but we weren't opposed to being put in to bat. We knew the wicket could be a bit stoppy at night, and it was quite dry since there hadn't been much rain around. We just stayed positive and decided that whatever we did first, we had to do it well. That's exactly what we did today."
Rashid Khan: "To keep the team in the hunt, we have to look at how we start with the ball. We should have restricted them to under 160. Throughout the tournament, we've struggled with our death bowling, giving away too many runs in the final overs, including today. That's an area where you lose all momentum heading into the next innings. We had them under control for the first 12 or 13 overs, but the way they finished took the game away from us. [Poor bowling or Rutherford's brilliance with the bat] It's a mix of both. We bowled some good deliveries, but execution was lacking at times. It also comes down to catching; dropping a catch gives so much momentum to the opposition. We didn't bowl according to our plans, especially toward the end. You have to trust your strengths, but we didn't execute what we wanted to. T20 is a tough format where things don't always go your way. Everyone is a professional and highly experienced, but sometimes, despite your best efforts, it just doesn't happen. You don't have much time to think; you only have 24 balls to get it right. It's just one of those days where what we tried didn't work. However, we still have the ability and the chance to make the top four. These last two games are vital; anything can happen on the table, so we'll take it one game at a time. [How to bring out the best] In our last five games, we knew we needed to win four to be in a good position. We lost this one, but you never know what can happen in the final two. If we win both with a bonus point, we could reach 20 points and potentially finish in the top two. That's the mindset we need. We have match-winners who can pull it off; we just need to clear our minds. What's happened is in the past; we focus on what's next. We'll come back with a better plan for the next game, and I fully back my team to do the job."
9:24 pm The Pretoria Capitals have jumped to the top of the standings following tonight's bonus-point victory, leaving MI Cape Town facing a steep uphill battle to secure a top-four finish. Cape Town's chase got off to a rocky start when their in-form opener, Rassie van der Dussen, departed in the third over, caught at long on. By the end of the Powerplay, they were struggling at 40/2 with both openers back in the dugout. It could have been even worse had Williams not misjudged a chance from Pooran, tracking forward only to watch the ball sail over his head. Pooran showed aggressive intent immediately, but after launching a massive six off Russell, he was caught at short third man. The game effectively slipped away in the 8th over during a decisive double-wicket maiden from Gideon Peters, who removed both Corbin Bosch and Karim Janat. As wickets fell in clusters, the MI Cape Town middle order failed to build any significant partnerships, and the chase completely lost its way. Reeza Hendricks remained the lone figure of resistance, holding firm at one end while his partners departed. He finished unbeaten on 68 runs after some late power hitting. In a dominant team display, all six Capitals bowlers took at least one wicket, with Peters leading the pack with a three-wicket haul. Post match presentation coming up.
Harsha: "Wondering what MICT management has to say. 8 games,5 losses, bottom of the table and they have the world's greatest players - Nicky P, Rashid Khan, KG, Trent Boult. Yet loosing 5 is astonishing. Hard seeing this for an MI fan."
Pretoria Capitals won by 53 runs
To secure a bonus point, the Pretoria Capitals must limit MI Cape Town to a score of 148 or fewer.
