11:40pm And...breathe. Another one of those games in the WPL, and it ended with the Giants becoming the first side ever to do the double over the Capitals in a WPL season. We have more action lined up for you in the comp, with the next game on Thursday, and that will pit the table-toppers against the side currently languishing at the bottom but still harbouring hopes of qualification. Do join us for that too, but until next, from Raghav and myself (Shashwat), this is goodbye!
Sophie Devine, Player of the Match: Got absolutely pumped in one of those overs and brought them back in. Brave from Ash to bowl to the shorter side in the 19th. Tried to stay calm and keep it as simple as possible (in the 20th over). Really important when you come in as overseas players to leave your ego at the door and actually ask for help. Conditions are pretty foreign for us, so it is about asking the locals how to play. That's been a key thing - having some cool conversations and making those tweaks to see how you can adapt to the conditions. At the start, you spend a lot of time getting volume (of training) in. Very important that you stay fresh (physically and mentally) and ensuring that you are 100 percent when it comes to game day. Been awesome to share the dressing room. Mooney was outstanding. Anushka again was fantastic. It is a real team effort.
Ashleigh Gardner, Gujarat Giants captain: (How she is feeling) It is a bit of a rollercoaster. We are in the entertainment industry at the end of the day and we entertained. Did our job with that but my heart rate was going through the roof in that last over (smiles). (On the score) Wickets have gotten progressively better. Last night, 200 almost chased down and what we scored, almost chased down again. 170-180 was par. We bowled well for 17 overs and then let them back in at the end. (On their plans) For us bowlers, we need to keep it simple. When you overcomplicate it, it does not work. Our two left arm spinners did that really well today. You need to stay consistent. Had a couple of close matches, been on the winning side and losing side. We have one more game, we need to win that to be confident of being in the playoffs. Being able to celebrate tonight is fantastic but we need to switch our focus to Mumbai, who we don't have a great record against.
Here is Sampath with a stat: Sophie Devine (401) is only the second player to take 400-plus wickets in women's T20s, after Amelia Kerr (414). Sneh Rana was Devine's 400th wicket in T20s.
Anjan: "This is what the WPL is all about, the Anushkas and Nikis believing in themselves and leading the fight for their teams."
Naveen Alaparth: "GG is safe as long as they are in Devine Hands"
Jemimah Rodrigues, DC captain: Firstly I think the way Rana and Prasad played was outstanding. It was special. They gave us hope. But it would have been nice to cross the finishing line. As long as we knew our batters were in we knew there was still hope and we kept believing and they kept believing. Niki, she's a youngster, the way she played and Rana bringing her experience. I don't know what else to say but they were outstanding. I know we didn't win it, but the way they played was outstanding. I just feel we had done really well with the ball. The last few overs we gave a few runs. We gave 15-20 runs extra. With the bat, we needed partnerships from the top order, including me, but that's where it didn't click. The next game is going to be very important. We have a bit of time off so it's important to regroup for that game.
Anushka Sharma: (On her emotions) I am out of words. A nail biting finish. All credit to Sophie and the catches we took. (On what was happening when the boundaries were flowing) At the time, when they were four or five down, we thought we had the match in our hands. She (Niki) batted really well but we won the match, and that is all that matters. (On her innings and if it was her best so far) The best is yet to come. Wicket was pretty good to bat on, enjoyed the outing. Did not do well from my side, could have done better. (Her approach) Not specifically anything in my mind. Just play with my same intent, back my strength and play according to that. (On her wrist) Now, everything is okay. But at the time, there was pain. Now it is better.
11:18pm Phew. What a game. A crazy, crazy contest and even that does not begin to explain it. For most of the chase, it swayed the Giants' way. But then, there was a twist. And what a twist it almost was. Niki Prasad, coming in when all hope was seemingly lost, took matters into her own hands and nearly crafted a chase that would have been told to generations of DC fans. But akin to Navi Mumbai earlier in the season, DC could not hit the final boundary the game needed and demanded, and they will leave Vadodara tonight with a feeling of what almost was.
The Giants will feel they have been here before. And that is because they indeed were. They surrendered the initiative with some loose bowling but then recovered just in the nick of time. Devine, as it was weeks ago, was the protagonist yet again, although it could be argued that Gayakwad's efforts earlier in the innings had left DC with too much of a mountain to climb. It is a win that keeps GG firmly in the hunt for the playoffs, and having pulled another victory out of the fire, they might even feel this could be their year.

4 off 1, and Prasad on strike. Who are you backing? The youngster or the veteran? Umpire asking Mooney to stand in closer to her natural position. She is almost on the ring
