6.58pm: Time to hear from the captains, starting with Dasun Shanaka: "Really disappointing, but we had a lot of positives with the ball. We kept them to a score 20 runs [under par]. I expected my players to bat well. [Bad batting, good bowling?] Combination, the pitch played well, was a bit slow. With the lights on it settled, but we batted badly. It's not that they bowled really well, we played some rash shots at critical intervals. [Versatile attack] Absolutely, we have five main bowlers, it's a nice attack to have so we can restrict sides. [Powerplay batting] Discussion was to take it deep. On these wickets, you have to take the right options and positive options. One bad game is not affordable in World Cups, we need to bounce back. The top four has done well in recent past so I'm sure they will do will in upcoming games."

Harry Brook: "Beautiful birthday present, an awesome effort to get over the line and bowl them out for 100. [Low scores] Don't think there were any demons, spinners on both sides used the pace really well, lack of pace was creating chances. We had a chat and adapted really well. It was slow, hard to time, Salty played exceptionally to get 60, with everyone playing around him. Not the fluent Phil Salt we are used to but he got us to a score. [Buttler form] Not concerned, he's a powerhouse, arguably our best white-ball player ever, lacking a bit of confidence at the moment but I'd rather he start like this and finish with a flourish. [Defending total] Spin worked for them, we've played a lot here and we knew that would play a part. [Jacks] He was annoyed with how he got out and he said he bowls better when he's angry. Don't need to vary lines, more about pace. We got reward for that with caught-and-bowleds, and a few caught on the boundary. Perfect adaptation to circumstances. Feel like we can play on any surface. Jos hasn't fired yet, but if we get on a good wicket he's going to get a hundred. Phil Salt, too. Once we figure the powerplay out and get on top with the bat, we're going to be a hard team to beat."

All three T20s [in SL] were at this ground, one of them we actually defended less than we did today. We had a chat in the dressing room, saying we could defend from anywhere. Glad we got the job done. I don't think much should surprise us here. [Defending 147, Nissanka] Keep him quiet, we know the areas he likes to hit. Don't overcomplicate it, let the ball and the wicket do the work. Playing Nissanka before, swinging it into him he hit me [into the scoreboard], so pace off and take it out of his arc. [Bowling in subcontinent] Need variations, mix it with your normal pace and put it in the right area, going to be challenging enough. Both Nepal and Italy had their best game against us. Everyone wants us to mess up. That was probably not the perfect game but every game is better than the last. It's not a sprint."

6.13pm: Disappointment for a packed crowd in Pallekele, SL succumbing to a 12th consecutive defeat to England in this format. And England didn't really fire again - certainly with the bat - but they overwhelmed SL with the ball to walk off comfortable victors. It was a funny game, really, because conditions seemed decent but only Phil Salt on either side got beyond 30. England go top of the early Super Eight standings, and one step closer to the semi-finals

Will Jacks is Player of the Match, his third such award at this comp: "We're buzzing with that. At halfway we were pleased to get up to 145 but knew we needed to bowl well. Jof [Archer] got us off to a good start and we managed to keep taking wickets. We seem to do well here. Just come off a series in SL. Twelve overs of spin here, we spin it hard and that helps. Seem to do well defending, squeeze the game. We know how hard that makes it chasing. [Bowling up top] Love getting the responsibility with the ball, encourages me to get into the game and bowl better. Bowling in the powerplay is not foreign to me and on a surface like that I come into the game. Haven't been at our best but been winning close games. Nice to get through the group stage where you're expected to win. We can come here and play with freedom, trust your game."
