NEW YORK -- Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. exited Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox in the fourth inning after taking a foul ball that ricocheted off the ground and into his groin area.
Chisholm immediately dropped to the ground in agony before manager Aaron Boone and a trainer checked on him. Chisholm remained on the ground for a few minutes before standing up, but the discomfort continued, and he limped off the field.
The Yankees did not have an update on Chisholm's status after the game.
Anthony Volpe pinch hit for Chisholm with a 2-2 count against right-hander Sean Burke. Volpe walked but was caught stealing second base moments later to end the inning. Two innings later, Volpe drove a ball to the left field wall and was thrown out at third base attempting to stretch the double into a triple.
It was one of the five hits the Yankees mustered against Burke, who held New York to a run over the final 7⅓ innings after the White Sox used left-hander Bryan Hudson as an opener. Andrew Benintendi's pinch-hit grand slam off Yankees reliever Camilo Doval in the eighth inning proved to be the difference as Chicago avoided a three-game sweep.
Chisholm's departure comes as the Yankees deal with a few major injuries that have tested their position player depth. Three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge (ribs), slugger Giancarlo Stanton (calf) and center fielder Trent Grisham (hamstring) are all on the injured list without clear timetables to return.
Chisholm, 28, is batting .228 with 10 home runs and a .720 OPS in 70 games this season.
