G Jonas Gustavsson removed from game due to illness, hospitalized

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins did not have an update on goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, who was removed from Tuesday's game after the first period because of an illness and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Nearly an hour after the Bruins' 6-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks at TD Garden, the team released a brief statement on Gustavsson's condition: "We do not expect any further update on Gustavsson tonight. Will pass along one as soon as we can."

The team would not indicate whether the incident was related to Gustavsson's previous heart condition, saying only, "Unable to provide anything beyond initial [statement]."

Gustavsson, 31, had a pair of surgeries for abnormal heart rhythm while he was with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2010 and again in 2011.

Bruins players expressed concern for him after Tuesday's game.

"I found out after the game, and it's never good news when one of your teammates is being hospitalized," Bruins captain Zdeno Chara said. "We're concerned, and hopefully everything is going to be OK."

The Bruins signed Gustavsson during the offseason to serve as the backup for starter Tuukka Rask. Gustavsson entered his 15th game of the season Tuesday with a 9-3-1 record, a 2.29 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.

Gustavsson made 14 saves on 16 shots, and the Ducks gained a 2-1 lead after the first period. Rask played the remainder of the game.

"I just saw he felt ill or something after the first period, and that was it," Rask said. "He didn't say anything. He just pointed to the trainer after the period, and that was it. That's all I know."

After the game, Bruins coach Claude Julien said he did not know Gustavsson's status.

"To be honest with you, I have no idea," Julien said. "He was brought to whatever hospital, so I was told. I'm in the middle of a game here, so that's all I was told, just like you guys."
