World Cup 2026: Which teams have been eliminated?

play
Lisbon erupts for Portugal's late winner vs. Croatia (0:31)

The biggest World Cup in history featuring 48 teams is shrinking fast as the tournament really hits its stride.

While some nations begin preparations for the round of 16, others are packing their bags after their tournament exit.

So which sides have been condemned to elimination and how did their World Cup hopes come to a heartbreaking end?

- 2026 FIFA World Cup match schedule: Fixtures, results, features

1. Haiti

Haiti qualified for only their second-ever World Cup, having last done so in 1974, when they failed to register a single point.

Fast-forward 52 years later, Haiti suffered the same fate, exiting the group stage following two defeats with no goals scored.

Faring in a tough Group C, Haiti fell to a 1-0 defeat against Scotland in their opener, despite pushing the Tartan Army to their limits and even coming close to an equaliser. Frantzdy Pierrot's header flashed past the post late on, denying Haiti their first World Cup goal in over half a century.

Their exit was confirmed after a 3-0 defeat to Brazil, despite a valiant second-half display against the five-time world champions.

2. Türkiye

Haiti's early exit may not have come as a surprise to many, but the same can't be said for the nation who crashed out two and a half hours later.

Türkiye, pipped as dark horses for a deep World Cup run, entered Group D boasting perhaps the best squad on paper with the likes of Arda Güler and Kenan Yildiz among other talents and it's safe to say they endured a nightmare tournament.

This stat just about sums it up: Türkiye registered 62 shots in two games and failed to score a single goal -- the most shots without a goal by a team in a single World Cup (since 1966).

After losing 2-0 to Australia in their opening game, many felt it was just a dip in the road and they would kick on from then. But they did not, falling behind against Paraguay and failing to score against ten men in the second half. Türkiye's fate was sealed then and there.

Despite being the better team statistically in both games, they were wasteful in possession and lacked cutting edge.

3. Tunisia

Tunisia followed suit with a tournament to forget. This was the nation's seventh World Cup tournament and they once again failed to make it out of their group, though it was certainly wishful to expect them to.

Competing in a tough Group F containing the Netherlands, Japan and Sweden, Tunisia conceded nine goals in two games.

Head coach Sabri Lamouchi was sacked after a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden but his replacement Herve Renard -- Tunisia's seventh manager since qualifying began -- did very little to prevent a 4-0 loss to Japan which came next.

There was no 'new manager bounce' as a strong Japan side swept them aside on the World Cup's 1000th game, condemning them to an inevitable elimination.

A 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands in their final group game confirmed this Tunisia team's status as one of the worst World Cup teams of recent years.

4. Jordan

Jordan, who didn't quite manage the heroics of their fellow debutants Cape Verde and Curaçao, are also out of the World Cup.

Dealt a very tough hand in Group J, with defending champions Argentina, Algeria and Austria, it was difficult to foresee Jordan pull off any upsets but they still managed to find the net in all three games.

They opened their campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Austria, with Ali Olwan scoring an equaliser to register the nation's first-ever World Cup goal and that certainly will long linger in the Jordanians' memory.

Nizar Al Rashdan added another moment to revel in, when he curled home against for a first-half lead against Algeria, but they struggled to navigate swathes of pressure and were overturned 2-1 in a late fightback.

Jordan's final group game saw them beaten 3-1 by Lionel Messi's Argentina.

5. Panama

Panama were knocked out of the World Cup following a narrow 1-0 loss to Croatia.

Substitute Ante Budimir's goal in the second half sealed Panama's fate, as they suffered the second loss of their campaign, following a defeat of the same scoreline to Ghana on June 17.

The defeat to Ghana was particularly bruising, as it came in the 95th minute of the match.

Panama were placed in a challenging group, including England, Croatia and Ghana. The match against Croatia also marked the 200th international cap for captain Luka Modric.

The legendary midfielder, 40, is at his fifth World Cup and was thrown into the air by his teammates at the end of the match as he became only the fourth men's player to reach that milestone.

Panama lost their final group game against England as Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane clinched top spot for the Three Lions.

6. Czechia

Czechia were eliminated from the World Cup on June 24 as Mexico maintained their 100% winning record and beat Czechia 3-0.

Mexico scored three goals in the second half as they finished top of Group A with maximum points and it was a match to remember as the legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, 40, made an appearance to mark his sixth World Cup.

Czechia failed to win any of their group games, only managing a draw against South Africa and go home with just one point.

7. Qatar

Bosnia and Herzegovina eliminated Qatar with a 3-1 defeat on June 24.

Qatar's only point came from their shock draw with Switzerland but they failed to win any of their group games.

Kerim Alajbegovic scored in the 29th minute to give Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose only other World Cup appearance came in Brazil in 2014, a lead it would never relinquish.

Bosnia and Herzegovina then added a second goal in the 34th minute, before Qatar scored in the 42nd minute make it a nervy game. Bosnia and Herzegovina scored again in the 80th minute to secure the victory send Qatar home.

8. Curaçao

Curaçao and Eloy Room won't be forgotten at this World Cup.

Against all odds, Curaçao became the smallest nation to ever qualify for a World Cup and quickly captured the hearts of many.

Faring in a tough Group E, Curaçao stunned Germany with an equaliser in their opening game but suffered a bruising 7-1 defeat in the end.

They then shocked Ecuador in a hard-fought goalless draw, as Room put on an all-timer goalkeeping display, producing 15 saves to equal Tim Howard's record and hand his nation their first World Cup point.

Curaçao produced a number of chances in their final game against Ivory Coast, but the Ivorian side proved too much in the end as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to confirm their elimination.

9. Iraq

Having been placed in Group I alongside France, Norway and Senegal, Iraq never really stood a chance.

They exit the World Cup having lost all three of their group games, scoring just one goal. Their final game, a 5-0 defeat to Senegal after Rebin Sulaka was sent off in the 13th minute, means that, with a goal difference of -11, they have been statistically the worst team at this year's World Cup.

10. Uruguay

Uruguay became the shock name to exit the tournament in the group stage when Fernando Muslera's error gave Spain a 1-0 win in the final match.

But, in truth, the damage was done when they could only manage draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, the latter of which took "their" place in the knockout stage thanks to an unbeaten group stage campaign.

11. Saudi Arabia

Elsewhere in Group H, after Saudi Arabia's 1-1 draw against Uruguay in their opening match had set them up well, Georgios Donis' side could not quite take advantage, losing 4-0 to Spain and only drawing 0-0 with Cape Verde.

In may ways, it mirrored their memorable 2022 campaign, in which they pulled off the shock of the World Cup by beating eventual champions Argentina, but went on to lose to Poland and Mexico and finish bottom of their group.

12. New Zealand

New Zealand will probably look back at their first game against Iran as the one where it all went wrong. The Kiwis led twice through a brace from Elijah Just, but were pegged back on both occasions and ended up with a 2-2 draw.

It would prove their only point of the tournament, as Egypt overturned their early lead to beat them 3-1, and then they were thrashed 5-1 by a Belgium side who, up to that point, had failed to impress. Their long wait to make it out of the World Cup group stage -- or even win a game -- goes on.

13. Scotland

It was a bitterly disappointing ending to Scotland's return to the World Cup. Steve Clarke's side looked to have put themselves in a good position with a 1-0 victory over Haiti in their opening game, but a 1-0 defeat to Morocco and a comprehensive 3-0 loss to Brazil had the Scots unable to make it as one of the tournament's eight best third-placed teams.

Clarke announced his resignation upon the confirmation of Scotland's exit, just 30 days after he had signed a deal to keep him as manager until 2030.

14. Uzbekistan

Having been drawn in a group alongside Portugal, Colombia and Congo DR, it was always going to be a difficult ask for Uzbekistan to progress.

The Asian side had some moments -- namely Abbosbek Fayzullaev's equaliser against Colombia and Eldor Shomurodov's glorious chip to open the scoring against Congo DR -- but ultimately exit the tournament with no points and a goal difference of -9.

15. South Korea

Arguably the second-most shocking exit of the group stage, behind Uruguay, South Korea will be extremely disappointed with their tournament.

Goals from Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeon-gyu gave Hong Myung-bo's side an opening-night win over Czechia, but 1-0 defeats to both Mexico and South Africa followed, meaning South Korea were not amongst the eight best third-placed teams. It means that talisman Son Heung-min will be 37 years old before he gets the chance to play another World Cup match.

16. Iran

After a difficult group stage campaign dominated by events off the field, Iran thought they had done enough to make the knockout stage as one of the eight best third-placed teams when Algeria's Riyad Mahrez scored in second-half stoppage time to make it Algeria 3-2 Austria.

But Sasa Kalajdzic's header moments later levelled the score at 3-3 to break Iranian hearts, sending the European side through instead. Despite going unbeaten, three draws was just not quite enough for Iran.

17. South Africa

South Africa went under the radar for many this summer after losing the tournament opener to Mexico.

A draw with Czechia set up a pivotal match against South Korea in the final round of games in Group A which was decided by Thalepo Maseko's 63rd-minute goal.

That set up a winnable-looking knockout meeting with Canada in Los Angeles, but this time a winner from Stephen Eustaquio sent the co-hosts through to the round of 16.

18. Japan

Japan threatened to cause a major shock when they went 1-0 up against Brazil in their round of 32 clash. But a second-half revival by Brazil, and a stoppage-time winner from Gabriel Martinelli, sent Japan packing.

Japan had started the World Cup brightly with a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands. They thrashed Tunisia 4-0 and drew with Sweden to advance from the group stages.

But despite an impressive first half, Japan were unable to knock the five-time winners Brazil out.

19. Germany

Germany became the first major nation to be dumped out of the World Cup when they lost a penalty shootout to Paraguay.

Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah missed their spot-kicks as the four-time winners crashed out.

Germany, historically known for their penalty shooutout coolness, were made to pay after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes against the Paraguayans.

20. Netherlands

The Netherlands lost to Morocco on penalties after missing three spot-kicks before Ismael Saibari sealed the win for the African side.

The Dutch broke the deadlock in normal time in the 72nd minute via a Cody Gakpo goal but Issa Diop then scored in the 91st minute to take the match to extra time.

Morocco then defeated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties.

21. Ivory Coast

The Ivory Coast fell in the round of 32, losing 2-1 to Norway after a late Erling Haaland winner. Amad Diallo had given them hope with a terrific equaliser but it wasn't enough.

They had previously beaten Ecuador and Curaçao, and narrowly lost to Germany.

22. Sweden

Sweden were perhaps unfortunate to run into a rampant France in the round of 32.

They had started unusually at the World Cup, beating Tunisia 5-1 then losing by the same scoreline to the Netherlands. A point against Japan ensured they qualified for the knockout stages.

But Graham Potter's side were halted abruptly by the brilliant French.

23. Ecuador

Despite beating Germany in the group stages, Ecuador succumbed to defeat in their first knockout match as they fell to Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

They suffered a 2-0 loss as Mexico won their first knockout game for 40 years.

Ecuador were dominated by a Mexico spurred on by the support of the home crowd. Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez sealed Ecuador's fate.

24. Congo DR

Even though they gave England a scare, taking a 1-0 lead into half-time, Congo DR saw their World Cup participation come to an end in their first knockout clash.

Brian Cipenga beat Jordan Pickford before goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi frustrated England with a string of saves.

However, Harry Kane ultimately came to England's rescue with a late brace that ended Congo DR's tournament.

25. Senegal

When Ismaila Sarr scored Senegal's second with a stunning finish against Belgium, the African side must have felt the doors to the quarterfinal opening for them. But a late show from Rudi Garcia's side ended their World Cup campaign in dramatic fashion.

Habib Diarra had given Senegal an early lead in Seattle before Sarr doubled it soon after half-time. But two quickfire goals from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans after the 85th minute forced the game into extra time.

The round-of-32 clash looked all set for penalty shoot-out before Belgium were handed a late penalty following a contentious VAR decision. Tielemans made no mistake from the spot to break Senegalese hearts.

26. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in their history, but the round of 32 is where their tournament story ended after a 2-0 loss to co-hosts the United States.

Folarin Balogun gave the U.S. the lead, but it was only after Malik Tillman's late free-kick that Mauricio Pochettino's side could breathe easy.

It was far from easy for the co-hosts and Bosnia ended their campaign in defeat, but with their heads held high.

27. Austria

After clinging on to second place in Group J thanks to a dramatic 3-3 draw with Algeria, Austria entered the round of 32 with a spring in their step.

However, any hope of a shock win over pre-tournament favourites Spain was quickly extinguished as La Roja dominated from the off and took a deserved 1-0 lead into the break thanks to Mikel Oyarzabal's opener.

Tottenham's Pedro Porro doubled Spain's lead after the interval before Oyarzabal found the back of the net again late on to add some gloss to the scoreline and send Austria packing.

28. Croatia

Croatia were sent packing in the round of 32 by Portugal in a match which pitted legends Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo against each other.

Ivan Perisic gave Croatia the lead but Ronaldo equalised with a penalty before Gonçalo Ramos headed a late winner. Croatia thought they'd equalised deep into stoppage time only for VAR to intervene, and break their hearts.

Croatia had started with a defeat to England but qualified from their group by beating Ghana and Panama.

29. Australia

Australia fell to Egypt in a penalty shootout in the round of 32 after a 1-1 draw.

The Socceroos opted to substitute goalkeeper Pat Beach for Mathew Ryan ahead of penalties but it backfired. Ryan made no saves while Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed from the spot.

30. Cape Verde

Cape Verde almost pulled off one of the biggest World Cup upsets of all time -- if not the biggest -- as they took defending champions Argentina to extra time.

After levelling the game twice, including in extra time, Cape Verde were left heartbroken when Cristian Romero's header went in via a deflection off Diney Borges from Lionel Messi's corner in the 111th minute.

Almost no one gave Cape Verde -- the smallest nation to ever play at a World Cup -- a chance coming into this tournament but the African debutants held their own and so nearly took Argentina to penalties.

Their World Cup campaign won't be forgotten quickly.

31. Ghana

Ghana fell to a 1-0 defeat to Colombia, bringing an end to the Black Stars' World Cup campaign.

Jhon Arias scored from a Luis Suárez cross in the 14th minute and Colombia held firm to keep their lead and secure their first knockout stage win at a World Cup since 2014.

Ghana failed to have a shot on goal as Colombia maintained their unbeaten record. The Black Stars had done well to qualify for the knockout rounds from a group that contained England and Croatia but couldn't make it past a determined Colombian side.

32. Canada

The first of the co-hosts to crash out of the World Cup was Canada, after a 3-0 loss to Morocco in the round of 16.

Injury problems to star man Alphonso Davies blighted the Canadians' campaign. But Jesse Marsch's side enjoyed morale-boosting wins over Qatar (6-0 in the group stage) and South Africa (1-0 in the round of 32).

But Morocco proved too much of a hurdle. Two goals from Azzedine Ounahi and a late strike from Soufiane Rahimi ensured Canada's progress was halted.

33. Paraguay

After a plucky penalties victory over Germany in one of the big shocks of the World Cup thus far, Paraguay could not repeat the same feat against France.

Les Bleus defeated the South American side 1-0, thanks to a Kylian Mbappe penalty in the 70th minute.

Paraguay were the first third place team to advance beyond the round of 32 but they could not pull off back to back shocks.
