Thomas Tuchel's side arrive in the quarterfinals after a nerve-wracking few weeks at the tournament. All the optimism from the 4-2 win over Croatia in the opening game was undone when England slumped to a dire 0-0 draw with Ghana in the following game.

The Three Lions then laboured slightly to a 2-0 win over Panama which saw them top the group.

England then nearly found themselves on the end of one of the shocks of the tournament as they trailed 1-0 to Congo DR in the round of 32 right up until the 75th minute. Some late heroics from Harry Kane saved the day.

The round-of-16 clash with Mexico was even more tense, as England survived a red card shown to Jarell Quansah to hold on for a dramatic 3-2 win, with arguably the Three Lions' best performance of the 21st century.

Quansah's dismissal and resulting two-game ban presents Tuchel with a real headache at right back, but the German will likely be able to welcome back Reece James, who trained on Friday having missed much of the World Cup through injury.

With Marc Guéhi and Declan Rice also available, the German coach has a full squad of players, save for Quansah and Jordan Henderson, who injured his wrist during the celebrations after the Mexico win.
