Shakhtar Donetsk will play their home matches for this season's Champions League league phase at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea announced on Friday.

Shakhtar, displaced by the ongoing situation in Ukraine, have previously played their "home" matches in European competition in Germany, Slovenia and Poland.

The announcement, which is subject to regulatory approvals, comes after sources told ESPN last week that Stamford Bridge was the Ukrainian champions' preferred stadium to play in this season.

They had also shortlisted Fulham's Craven Cottage and Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium as alternatives.

In a statement, Chelsea said: "FC Shakhtar have played in countries across Europe and we look forward to welcoming them to London for their Champions League campaign this year.

"We will be working with the Shakhtar team closely over the coming weeks to ensure that matchdays run safely and smoothly for their team and supporters."

Shakhtar said: "Playing our Champions League home matches at Stamford Bridge is a special opportunity for Shakhtar.

"We are grateful to Chelsea Football Club for the opportunity to host our games at this special venue. Stamford Bridge is one of the most famous stadiums in world football, with an incredible history and atmosphere.

"We are convinced that Shakhtar's matches in London will provide unforgettable emotions for Ukrainian and English fans."

Shakhtar have not played a match at their Donbas home since May 2014 due to the invasion of that part of Ukraine by Russian-backed separatists the previous month. Instead, they have had to play their "home matches" in other parts of the country.

Since the wholescale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the team has played its European matches outside of Ukraine altogether.

Shakhtar will find out their eight opponents in this season's league phase when the draw is made on Thursday, Aug. 27.

The Ukrainian side are in Pot 3, meaning they could face any one of the five English teams in this year's competition: Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United or Aston Villa.

Chelsea will not play in European competition this season after finishing 10th in last season's Premier League.
