Manchester United are monitoring Alejandro Balde's situation at Barcelona ahead of a potential move before the transfer deadline, sources have told ESPN.
United are in the market for a new left-back and enquired about Newcastle's Lewis Hall earlier in the summer. Club sources are playing down the chances of securing Balde, but Barcelona have been made aware of their interest.
The 22-year-old was left out of the Barcelona squad for Sunday's 5-0 win over Elche. Head coach Hansi Flick explained the decision by saying he told the Spain international it was better that he "cleared his mind" amid intense transfer speculation.
Sources have told ESPN that Flick wants a face-to-face meeting with Balde before making a decision on his future. Balde is keen for assurances about his playing prospects this season. Both João Cancelo and Xavi Espart can play in the same position.
If Balde is allowed to leave and he shows a desire to move to Old Trafford, United would prefer to negotiate a season-long loan deal with an option to make the move permanent. Barcelona value the Spain international at between €30 million (£26m / $35m) and €40m (£34m / $47m).

Sources have told ESPN that United are interested in signing a new left-back because of concerns that Luke Shaw will not be able to play three games a week in the Premier League and Champions League.
Shaw started every league game last season, but the 31-year-old has had injury problems in the past.
