Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic skip Madrid Open with injuries

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 4 Novak Djokovic have both pulled out of the Madrid Open because of lingering injuries.

Alcaraz, the seven-time Grand Slam winner, will miss out on the tournament in the Spanish capital with a wrist injury after also having skipped the Barcelona Open this week.

"Madrid is home, one of the most special places on the calendar for me, and that's why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row," Alcaraz posted to social media. "It hurts especially not to be able to be in front of my fans, in a tournament that's so special to me. Thank you for your continued support, and I hope to see you soon."

Djokovic hasn't competed since the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. He missed the Miami Open because of a right shoulder injury and skipped the Monte Carlo Masters.

"Madrid, unfortunately I won't be able to compete at the Madrid Open this year," he wrote Friday on his social media accounts. "I'm continuing my recovery in order to be back soon. Hasta pronto!"

Djokovic is a three-time champion in Madrid.
