GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals rookie wide receiver Damond Powell remains in a hospital healing from a gunshot wound, head coach Bruce Arians said Saturday before the team’s opening practice of training camp.
Powell, an undrafted free agent out of Iowa, was shot in the face and neck while sitting in a car with friends in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, on July 24.
Arians said he texted Powell the day after the incident, and that as recently as a couple of days ago, Powell spoke with head athletic trainer Tom Reed and the team received a report on his condition.
It’s unclear if and when Powell will be able to play, though his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
“That’ll be strictly up to the doctors. He’s lucky to be alive,” Arians said. “He’s got a shuttered jaw. He’s got a neck brace on where the bullet went through his neck and didn’t hit anything. So when he’s cleared, then we can possibly talk about bringing him back off that injury list.”
Powell signed with Cardinals on May 5. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound receiver played two seasons at Iowa, where he caught 31 passes for 608 yards and five touchdowns.
