GLENDALE, Ariz. -- If Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians got boring this week, it’d be understood.
These are the dog days of training camp. The grind continues, with the end in sight. But Arians didn’t let up, he didn’t let the monotony of camp get the better of him this week.
Here’s a look at some of his best quotes from the past week:
On the use of tablets to watch game film in nearly real-time during games: “Well, we used them the first game. They’re not going to be there during the season. I watched one play that the ref called holding and it wasn’t holding, and I showed it to him. I said this would be your worst nightmare if I had this on the sideline.”
On Andre Ellington working on his punt returns: “Worked a lot with guys running to his face with a lot of s----- kicks, running up there [and deciding], ‘Do I catch it? Do I fair catch it? Do I let it hit the ground?’ Just so he can get a lot of decisions in that manner. Doesn’t take much for him. When you’re thinking about a punt return, it’s like a running zone play. You stretch it and hit a crease. He just has to make one guy miss and it’s a house call.”
On Arizona not getting as many interceptions as Arians wants: “I’d like to see us intercept one damn ball. We didn’t intercept any in San Diego last week.”
On linebacker Shaq Riddick: “I was hoping he’d make more plays by now.”
On wide receiver John Brown practicing after missing time due to a concussion after not mentioning him on the not-practicing list: “Yeah, Smoke’s cleared. He’s out there. I ain’t say his name, he’s out there.”
On fans overreacting about two preseason losses: “I think the tendency is to, ‘Woe is me.’ But when our starters have played 15 plays, no, 20 plays, maybe, that’s not even a good half. So, we’ve had bad halves before and come back and won games. It’s not a doomsday situation by any stretch of the imagination.”
On safety Tyrann Mathieu getting into shape emotionally: “It takes a little time to get in passion shape, too.”
