Bills sign former Jets TE Matthew Mulligan

The Buffalo Bills signed tight end Matthew Mulligan, the team announced Thursday.

Mulligan, 30, played in 34 games for Rex Ryan with the New York Jets from 2009-2011, making 11 starts. He joins wide receiver Percy Harvin, fullback John Conner, quarterback Matt Simms and potentially tackle Wayne Hunter as former Jets who have rejoined Ryan in Buffalo this offseason.

At 6-foot-4 and 267 pounds, Mulligan is considered more of a blocking tight end who could fit in Greg Roman's run-heavy scheme. Charles Clay is the Bills' undisputed top tight end, but the rest of the depth chart is unsettled between Chris Gragg, MarQueis Gray, sixth-round pick Nick O'Leary, undrafted rookie Clay Burton and former Canisius College basketball player Chris Manhertz.

The Bills will be Mulligan's ninth NFL team since entering the league in 2008. He had stints with three teams last season after playing in 15 games for the New England Patriots in 2013.

The Bills waived undrafted rookie cornerback Merrill Noel to make room for Mulligan on the 90-man roster.
