Continuing my look at the top 10 unrestricted free agents for the Carolina Panthers is a player who has been an inside pass-rushing specialist the past three seasons.
Next up: No. 4, DT Dwan Edwards
Reason to re-sign: He’s an experienced veteran who provides a big inside push on passing situations. He led all Carolina tackles with four sacks this past season, and he’s had 13 in the past three. He told me after the season that he felt healthier than he has in a long time after the final game. He wants to remain with Carolina, and he won’t demand a high salary, earning $2 million in 2014.
Reason not to re-sign: He will turn 34 in May, so you have to wonder how much is left in the tank. With Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short heading into their third seasons, it might be time to groom younger players to fill in behind them in Carolina’s four-tackle rotation.
Prediction: Like with Colin Jones mentioned earlier in this analysis, it will be tough for the Panthers to keep two aging tackles. The inside push Edwards provides for a team that thrives on pressuring the quarterback might be too much to pass up. They might let him test the market, because there won’t be a high demand, and get him for the best price they can.
