Panthers' unrestricted free agents: No. 2, Ed Dickson

Continuing my look at the top 10 unrestricted free agents for the Carolina Panthers is a player that enabled the team to return to a two tight end set in 2014.

Next up: No. 2, TE Ed Dickson

Reason to re-sign: His ability to stay in and block in Carolina's two tight end set helped Greg Olsen get a team-high 84 catches and his first Pro Bowl selection. Dickson's value as a blocker was magnified when fullback Mike Tolbert suffered a leg injury that forced him to miss eight weeks. Dickson took on many of Tolbert's responsibilities. The former Oregon star became more valuable as a receiver when Tolbert returned. He was targeted 14 times in Carolina's final two regular-season games and two playoff games after being targeted only 17 times in the first 14 games.

Reason not to re-sign: Not many unless Carolina believes there's another tight end on the market who is better.

Prediction: He should be re-signed. Offensive coordinator Mike Shula said repeatedly last season the tight end in Carolina's system has to basically learn five positions. It takes a while. Hard to believe the Panthers want to spend time getting another player acclimated to their system when they have one in hand that won't cost much in free agency.
