With 20 players set to be restricted or unrestricted free agents, the Dallas Cowboys will have plenty of decisions to make on who to keep and who to let go.
Let’s take a look at the free agents to be and how they could fit into the Cowboys’ future:
Linebacker Justin Durant
Type: Unrestricted
What he did: In just six games in 2014, Durant was credited with 59 tackles by the coaches. He found his home as a weak-side linebacker in their 4-3 scheme. He also had four tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries, an interception, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. His season came to an end with a biceps tear that required surgery. In 10 games in 2013 the coaches credited him with 30 tackles, two tackles for loss, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery playing mostly at the strong-side.
What he could do: He would give the Cowboys some cover at the linebacker position for the next couple of years so they would not be in a position to absolutely need to draft a linebacker in the spring. He has shown the ability to play all three linebacker spots, which is a major plus. His teammates voted him a captain at the start of the season, so there is a level of respect there. With questions about Rolando McClain and Bruce Carter, Durant could be a cheaper option.
What it should cost: When he signed in 2013, he received a $400,000 signing bonus and $650,000 in total guarantees. He turns 30 in September and has played one full season in his career. While he was productive when he was on the field in 2014, he missed more games than he played. The coaches like him a lot and feel his is suited well for the scheme. There might not be a rush for his services, so what happens with McClain could factor into whether he comes back. If he does come back, the most likely possibility is with a deal similar to the one he signed in 2013.
