OXNARD, Calif. -- Whether Tony Romo and the rest of the Dallas Cowboys' first-team offense plays a snap or not on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams, there will be plenty to watch in the Boys' preseason opener.
Here’s a look at five things to watch:
Chaz Green: With the surprising retirement of Charles Brown days before training camp began, the swing tackle job was given to Green. He got off to a bit of a slow start to camp. But he has performed better as of late. He did not play a game last season as a rookie because of hip surgery. His role should not be underestimated. If something happens to Tyron Smith or Doug Free, Green would be the guy. The Cowboys don’t want to move Zack Martin or La'el Collins to tackle (even though Collins played tackle in college). Green will play a ton at tackle in the preseason as a test.
Andy Jones: The undrafted wide receiver has put himself in contention for a roster spot. He moves better than expected, and he has terrific hands. He has received work with the regulars on offense, and he will play quite a bit. Since he played at non-scholarship Jacksonville, it will be interesting to see how he responds to the big lights of an NFL preseason game. So far in camp, he has shown the game isn’t too big for him. Strictly as a receiver, he would be fifth in line; but if he can show anything on special teams, that would greatly help his cause.
Mark Nzeocha: A seventh-round pick last year, the linebacker was limited as a rookie because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in college. He looks the part athletically and has found himself around the ball at times in camp. There’s a chance he could work with the starters on Saturday night. The Cowboys want him to be a core special-teams player but they hope he can develop into a down-the-line contributor on defense, as well.
Darius Jackson: Whatever the over/under is on carries for Jackson (if there is such a thing), take the over. With injuries to running backs Ezekiel Elliott, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar, and the team not wanting to wear down Alfred Morris, Jackson will get a lot of work. The sixth-round pick faces a tough road to the Cowboys’ 53-man roster because of the numbers, but he will certainly have a chance to impress every other team.
Ryan Russell, Charles Tapper, Michael McAdoo: The Cowboys need pass-rush help. These three will get the chance to show what they can do, although Tapper might be held out with a sore lower back. Russell has worked with the starters at both defensive end spots so far in camp and needs to show the coaches he can bring it every down. McAdoo hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2011. He has been a surprise in camp with his athleticism and ability to close the edge. Tapper can play either side, but the Cowboys drafted him to attack the passer. Jobs are open, and they won’t lack for opportunity.
