FRISCO, Texas – Looking for numbers to help them get through Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys signed defensive tackle Richard Ash off the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad.
In a perfect world the Cowboys would have been able to re-sign Zach Moore, who was released Monday to make room for Randy Gregory, but he was claimed by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday.
Ash, who has spent the bulk of the year on the Jaguars’ practice squad, was the next-best option. He has played in one regular-season game this season and had four tackles. Ash, 6-foot-3, 333 pounds, signed with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent from Western Michigan in 2015.
Ash will have to get up to speed quickly. Jacksonville plays a similar style defense, which could help make a smooth transition. The Cowboys are expected to be without DeMarcus Lawrence (back), Cedric Thornton (ankle), Tyrone Crawford (shoulder, hamstring) and Terrell McClain (ankle) this week, leaving the Cowboys with only six defensive linemen.
Gregory, who played in his first game of the season on Monday against the Detroit Lions, is working through an oblique strain. Linebacker Kyle Wilber will see some defensive end work. Defensive ends David Irving and Jack Crawford also can play defensive tackle, which allows defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli some versatility.
To make room for Ash, defensive end Ryan Davis, who suffered a knee injury against the Lions, will be placed on injured reserve.
