Morning Roar: Jim Caldwell takes blame for delay of game

When the Detroit Lions ended up with a delay of game call Sunday against Atlanta, some players thought they had lost. Others knew they'd get one more shot.

Still, it was a bad look for Detroit -- even if Lions kicker Matt Prater ended up missing the 43-yarder that didn't count and making the 48-yarder that counted to beat Atlanta, 22-21. And on Tuesday, Lions coach Jim Caldwell took the blame for what happened.

"Obviously that's our fault just in terms of getting there, getting set, and getting ready," Caldwell said. "It was poor but it was fortunate so I'll take that. I'm not going to point at one guy or one thing -- it's my fault plain and simple. Anything that goes on to that field, any call that's made, any situation, it all runs through me. That's my fault and I got to do a better job of getting those guys out there and getting them ready."

Caldwell said the Lions work on those situations -- not the delay of game, but last-second field goals to win -- every week in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. On Sunday, though, that practice didn't really help at first with the penalty call.

Punter Sam Martin said Sunday he was telling both Prater and holder Don Muhlbach to "hurry up" when he saw the clock was dwindling down and Prater said he would have preferred to kick from 43 instead of 48 even if the Wembley Stadium grass was a little better five yards back.

But the operation was slow getting off, leading to the flag and what ended up being a good call for the Lions.
