It's no longer the shoes: Matthew Stafford's footwear fine rescinded

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Matthew Stafford is switching cleats because he no longer wants to have to deal with issues about his shoes.

The Detroit Lions quarterback was fined $5,787 against Seattle for a uniform infraction – basically, there was too much blue in his cleats and that was against the NFL’s uniform code. He appealed the fine and had it rescinded, but to avoid the hassle in the future, he’s just going to wear a new pair of shoes.

He said he spoke with NFL Vice President of Operations Merton Hanks on Tuesday, when the fine was rescinded, and that the issue was explained to him. He said he was not fined for his shoes Sunday against Arizona after they added a little extra gray to the shoes to make them NFL-legal.

“It’s way too complicated for shoes,” Stafford said. “Honestly. But it had to do with being too much blue, I think. So I understood and I will move on with a new pair of cleats.”

Stafford was initially confused by the fine, he told reporters, because they were the same shoes some of his teammates wore last season. Stafford's wife, Kelly, initially posted on Instagram about the fine last week -- that's how it came about -- but then pulled down the post.
