ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Eric Ebron walked. Eric Ebron talked to teammates. Everything Monday revolved around the Detroit Lions tight end and what was going on with his injured lower leg. That he wasn’t in a boot and was moving around at all was a good sign, especially since the injury looked much worse Saturday.
The Lions are predictably remaining mum on the injury and we’ll start with tight ends when looking at what went on during Monday’s practice.
1. Cole Wick is going to have a major chance: I wrote about it Monday as well, but with Ebron hurt and Brandon Pettigrew still out, Wick has every opportunity to show he can make a roster and stick early in the NFL. He has pretty good hands, very good size and 6-foot-6 and will be a nice short target in the preseason. Don’t expect him to break the field open or do anything intense but he could be a decent short safety valve for Detroit’s quarterbacks. I don’t think he has the arm length or the vertical that former Lions tight end Joseph Fauria did, so he’s not going to be that type of player, but he could end up as a decent No. 3 tight end. Wick did some 1-on-1 work with receivers and corners in individual drills Monday and had Ebron coaching him, as well.
2. Alex Carter continues to struggle: It has not been a good camp for last year’s third round pick. He missed all of last season due to injury and has been routinely beaten by wide receivers during this training camp. Undrafted rookie Jay Lee -- who was the star of Saturday’s mock game -- beat him pretty badly on an inside route during individuals and then on a deep route later in the period. Lee just ran right by Carter. The Lions staff was coaching Carter up after every rep, but it has been a definite adjustment process for him.
3. Darrin Walls had a strong practice: The veteran cornerback had a couple of big plays in practice. He broke up a Dan Orlovsky pass intended for Andre Roberts along the sideline and then broke up another pass later in the 11-on-11 period -- this time a Matthew Stafford attempt intended for Golden Tate. Walls stuck with Tate step-for-step and then batted the pass down. Tate got no separation on him. The Lions are likely to need a veteran behind starters Darius Slay and Nevin Lawson. While Johnson Bademosi is there, too, Walls has the experience to be a good depth/fill-in corner. Overall, it was a strong day for the defense.
4. Josh Bynes has passed Jon Bostic: Another day goes by and Bynes is once again working with the first team in installation and drills. He started camp working with the second unit, but it is a pretty consistent first-unit move for him right now. This is more of a place-holder situation until DeAndre Levy returns from injury, but figure Bynes will get first-team work Friday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The most noticeable play in his area Monday was a perfectly thrown ball from Jake Rudock -- possibly his best throw of camp -- to Theo Riddick downfield in one-on-ones. Riddick caught the ball in stride to beat Bynes.
5. This and that: Four players missed practice -- Ebron, wide receivers TJ Jones and Andre Caldwell and offensive lineman Cornelius Lucas. Lions coach Jim Caldwell refused to update Jones’ status after he was hurt during Saturday’s mock game. He also declined to answer whether Jones had a concussion. ... Don Carey made his first noticeable play of camp, intercepting a Stafford pass intended for Orson Charles. It was a really, really good read by Carey, who is in a tough battle for a roster spot as a depth safety. ... The Lions will travel to Pittsburgh tonight and then practice the next two days in Latrobe, Penn., with the Steelers.
