INDIANAPOLIS – As I wrote Monday morning, the Indianapolis Colts aren't in the position to fall to 0-2 because of the tension that’s already inside the organization. They can wash away their Week 1 loss to Buffalo with an impressive performance against the New York Jets.
Let’s take a look at several key topics to pay attention to during the game:
1. Run and run some more. The Colts basically abandoned their running game after the first series against the Bills. They went through a stretch where they attempted 18 straight passes and 19 minutes without running back Frank Gore touching the ball. Gore (8 carries, 31 yards) didn’t come to Indianapolis to be a decoy in the offense. Coach Chuck Pagano said they have to find a balance in their offense after quarterback Andrew Luck attempted 49 passes. "We're not going to survive by the pass only," Pagano said. "I think everybody understands that."
2. Time for Andre Johnson to play big. With fellow receiver T.Y. Hilton (knee) possibly not being 100 percent if he does play, Johnson has to redeem himself from an unimpressive Week 1 performance where he had four catches for 24 yards and dropped a pass in the end zone on a 2-point conversion. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Jets use Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis on Hilton – if he plays – or Donte Moncrief. That means Johnson could be matched up against the Jets third cornerback if Antonio Cromartie doesn’t play.
3. The Colts have already ruledout Greg Toler and Darius Butler, their second and third cornerbacks. Pro Bowler Vontae Davis will be ready for his matchup against Brandon Marshall. You don’t know what to expect out of Jalil Brown, Sheldon Price and Eric Patterson. Price and Patterson have combined for one NFL game in their career. “When this moment happens it’s a great opportunity,” Pagano said. “A lot of guys get found having opportunities like this. That’s what we tell them all the time. They’re going to play, and they’re going to play well. They have to.”
4. It’s not often this will be said, but Luck has to play better. He was off the mark against the Bills. Luck underthrew Hilton on his first interception and cost the Colts a big play when his throw was off the mark to Gore on a screen pass. Luck allowed the Bills to dictate the game (22 pass attempts of 5 yards or less) instead of it being the other way. The receivers were at fault, too, but the Colts will go as far as Luck will take them.
5. Pressure, pressure and more pressure. The Colts did not hit Buffalo quarterback Tyrod Taylor one time. Now they go against pocket-passing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Colts struggled against pocket passers last season. But there's no excuse this time because Fitzpatrick isn't in the same category as Tom Brady, Tony Romo or Ben Roethlisberger. Indianapolis should get a significant boost if Robert Mathis (Achilles) makes his season debut against New York.
