INDIANAPOLIS -- The last thing the Colts needed was another loss, not after such an underwhelming start to their season.
And it seemed they weren't helping their chances to avoid that third loss when they decided to sit their franchise quarterback for the first time in his four-year NFL career. And they turned to 40-year-old Matt Hasselbeck, who hadn’t started a game since Nov. 4, 2012, to start for the injured Andrew Luck (shoulder).
Hasselbeck did what was necessary in leading the Colts to their second victory of the season, a 16-13 overtime win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Helped by a missed field goal by Jaguars kicker Jason Myers in overtime, Hasselbeck completed a 28-yard pass to tight end Coby Fleener to get the Colts into Jacksonville territory in overtime. Then ageless wonder Adam Vinatieri made a 27-yard field goal to win the game for the Colts.
What it means: Nothing like the AFC South to help the Colts cure their blues. The victory extended the Colts' winning streak over division foes to 15 games. The Colts haven’t lost an AFC South game since Week 15 of the 2012 season.
What were they thinking? Handing the ball off to running back Frank Gore at the goal line is turning into a risky move for the Colts. Gore fumbled on a run inside the 5-yard line for the second time in three games in the fourth quarter. With the score tied at 13, Gore took the handoff and lost the ball. The Jaguars recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback. He also lost a fumble at the goal line against the New York Jets in Week 2.
One reason to get excited: Vinatieri joined elite company when he became the first player to score 1,000 points with two teams. Vinatieri’s three field goals -- 54, 32 and 27 yards -- and his extra point gave him 1,004 points with the Colts. He had 1,156 points with the New England Patriots.
One reason to panic: Rookie running back Josh Robinson continues to have problems holding onto the ball. His first-half fumble gave the Jaguars a short field to work with and led to a touchdown later in the drive. Robinson fumbled in a preseason game against St. Louis and he caught a break against Buffalo in Week 1 because a penalty was called on the play.
Fantasy watch: Fleener took advantage of Dwayne Allen (ankle) being out for the second straight week. Fleener had nine receptions for 83 yards and the Colts’ only touchdown.
Ouch: The Colts lost starting linebacker Jerrell Freeman and backup cornerback Jalil Brown to groin injuries in the first half. Freeman was replaced by Josh McNary in the lineup and the Colts used Josh Thomas as their third cornerback.
