Chiefs look better on offense, worse on defense

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs are not done building their 2016 roster but they’re close. They may add another veteran or two in free agency, and they have seven draft picks and will sign some players who go undrafted.

But the top of the roster is mostly finished. Here is how their starting lineup compares from last year to this:

The changes on offense look mostly like upgrades. That’s true for right tackle (where Mitchell Schwartz has been one of the best in the business), running back (assuming Jamaal Charles returns from his torn ACL as the player we remember him being) and slot receiver (where De'Anthony Thomas and others didn’t deliver much for the Chiefs last season).

It may also be true at the second wide receiver, where I’m projecting Chris Conley to beat out Albert Wilson during training camp.

The one offensive spot where the Chiefs look like they’ll take a backward step is left guard, where Jeff Allen was a solid player. That doesn’t mean Zach Fulton can’t help the Chiefs.

The Chiefs were able to hang on to many of their defensive free agents, including Jaye Howard, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson and Eric Berry, who is unsigned but protected from the open market because he’s the franchise player.

The Chiefs did lose one solid defensive player in Sean Smith. The Chiefs like Phillip Gaines, who started the first three games last season before tearing his ACL and ending his year. The Chiefs expect Gaines back at full strength for the start of training camp. Even if he is, he won’t be as solid as Smith, at least not to begin with.

The Chiefs may have lost Houston, who had ACL surgery. Depending on his rehab, he could be back for a significant part of the season. But the Chiefs would be wise not to expect that. Ford has some positive moments last season, but even the Chiefs don’t expect him to be the all-around presence that Houston is.

The Chiefs also lost two other defensive players who while not starters played a lot and were productive. Safety Tyvon Branch left as a free agent and safety Husain Abdullah retired. The Chiefs have yet to replace either one, though they moved cornerback Jamell Fleming to safety.

It’s still early and things could change. But when it comes to personnel, the Chiefs look better on offense and worse on defense.
