What are Chiefs getting in safety Stevie Brown?

It wouldn’t seem there’s much for fans to be excited about with the Kansas City Chiefs' recent signing of veteran safety Stevie Brown. He was out of the NFL last season after being released at the end of training camp by both the Houston Texans and New York Giants.

But Brown did have eight interceptions for the Giants in 2012, so he has a history of making plays. Then there’s the Chiefs’ history of finding veteran safeties seemingly on the scrap heap (Husain Abdullah, Kurt Coleman, Tyvon Branch) and turning them into productive players.

So there might be something to this signing for the Chiefs, too. Brown missed all of the 2013 season with a torn ACL, and though he returned to play for the Giants the following season, he indicated he feels better physically now than at any time since before the injury.

"Missing last year was kind of a blessing," Brown told reporters after signing with the Chiefs. "It allowed me to get everything back healthy, get everything back right, do everything that I needed to do. I didn’t have to rush back to do anything. Now, I’m just ready to go.

"It’s like coming in as a rookie all over again."

The Chiefs might be due to find a bust at safety after their string of successes. Brown might turn out to be one.

But he seems motivated to become the player he once was, and the Chiefs seem to know how to get the most out of veteran safeties other teams might not want, so it’s more likely Brown joins Abdullah, Coleman and Branch as someone who helps Kansas City win some games.
