Knile Davis makes a surprise return for Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Running back Knile Davis was just a bit player for the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He carried three times for 10 yards and caught one pass for 7 yards.

But Davis was still a story in that he played at all. Traded by the Chiefs to Green Bay on Oct. 17, when Kansas City had a full backfield, Davis was with his third team of the week when he rejoined the Chiefs on Saturday.

"It’s been a whirlwind, but I’m excited to be home," said Davis, who received a warm ovation from the Arrowhead Stadium fans when he got the ball for the first time. “Everybody embraced me when I came back -- coaches and teammates. It felt like home.

"It felt good to get back on that field. There’s something about Arrowhead Stadium that gives you a good feeling."

To recap, Davis was released by the Packers on Monday. He was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets but quickly released when they signed C.J. Spiller. Davis’ time as a Jet was so brief that he never left for New York.

"They need to send me a jersey," he said of the Jets.

Maybe the most surprising transaction of the week was the one that had Davis returning to the Chiefs. He was fourth on the depth chart when he was traded, behind Spencer Ware, Jamaal Charles and Charcandrick West. But the Chiefs had a desperate need for a back after they lost Charles to the injured reserve list and Ware for at least Sunday’s game. They signed Bishop Sankey early last week but obviously felt he was unable to help against the Jaguars. He was inactive and didn’t play.

As such, the Chiefs signed Davis, and he played without the benefit of a practice.

“I didn’t have to learn the playbook," he said.

Davis’ second stay with the Chiefs might not be long. If Ware returns to practice this week, the Chiefs will have three backs, in addition to Davis.

But after he made a return that seemed improbable, Davis might have a future with the Chiefs after all.
