The aftermath may be worse than the horrific performance of the Oakland Raiders to open what was considered to be a promising 2015 season for the long-time struggling franchise.
In addition to being outplayed in every facet of the game in a 33-13 home loss to Cincinnati on Sunday, the Raiders suffered injuries to a few key players. ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Monday that the Raiders don't expect Derek Carr at home Sunday against Baltimore because he is waiting results of an MRI. Carr hurt this throwing hand on a run in the second quarter Sunday and did not return to the game. Oakland coach Jack Del Rio said Sunday X-rays came back negative for broken bones.
As expected, Mortensen reported the Raiders have been in contact with quarterback Christian Ponder, who the Raiders cut just last week. Matt McGloin will play as long as Carr can't. McGloin had six career NFL starts, all in 2013, his rookie season.
Also, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported safety Nate Allen may have a torn ACL. He left Sunday's game in the first quarter after teammate Ray-Ray Armstrong collided into him. Allen signed a four-year, $23 million deal this year as a free agent.
Oakland's other starting safety, Charles Woodson, is having an MRI on his shoulder, which he injured in one of the game's final plays. The Raiders are woefully thin at safety. Larry Asante took Allen's place. The only other safety on the roster is undrafted rookie Keenan Lambert, who was claimed off waivers by Seattle earlier this month.
Oakland will surely add to the position. The injuries will likely ramp up speculation that Oakland could trade for Seattle holdout Kam Chancellor, one of the league's better safeties. In addition, Chancellor played for Oakland defensive coordinator Ken Norton in Seattle, the Raiders have salary-cap room and he is the older half-brother of Lambert.
However, Seattle has been reluctant to trade Chancellor. Plus, the Raiders looked like they're a lot further away than Chancellor on Sunday. However, the thought of having Chancellor and young pass-rusher Khalil Mack and Aldon Smith on the field together would be an appealing to any team.
Also on Sunday, defensive tackle Justin Ellis and cornerback DJ Hayden both hurt their ankles as well.
For now, Oakland is simply trying to pick up the pieces and see exactly how bad these injuries are and will try to move forward, starting in Week 2 against the Ravens.
